The Los Angeles Lakers have “weighed” the idea of signing former All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas, according to the latest reporting from Marc Stein.

Here's what Stein writes in his Substack newsletter:

The Los Angeles Lakers still have a few roster spots open and have weighed using one of them to sign former All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas, league sources say.

The addition of Thomas is far from assured, sources stressed, but the Lakers are looking for additional backcourt punch as well as wing depth as they decide how to supplement the 12 veteran players they have under contract.

… Sources say that the Lakers do not regard Thomas' bumpy stint alongside James in Cleveland during the first half of the 2017-18 season as a deterrent. The larger question is whether Thomas is the best candidate for an end-of-the-roster role.

The Lakers have three more roster spots to fill, though one is expected to go to Jared Dudley. The Lakers entered 2020-21 with two open spots, which they filled later in the season with Andre Drummond and Ben McLemore. Re-signing Wesley Matthews remains a possibility, too.

The Lakers have reshaped their backcourt this offseason. After trading for Russell Westbrook (who was introduced on Tuesday), L.A. re-signed Talen Horton-Tucker and picked up Kent Bazemore, Kendrick Nunn, Wayne Ellington, and Malik Monk via free agency. Los Angeles let Dennis Schroder and Alex Caruso walk.

James and Thomas never beefed, but they didn't exactly jell either during their brief stint together with the Cleveland Cavaliers. James was against the Kyrie Irving trade that brought IT to the Cavs.

Thomas dropped 81 points in Jamal Crawford's CrawsOver league last weekend.

Since averaging 28.9 points per game for the Boston Celtics in 2016-17, Thomas has played just 87 games for five different franchises. He averaged 15.6 PPG in 17 games for the Lakers in 2017-18.

Los Angeles brought back multiple former Lakers this offseason, including Ellington, Howard, Ariza, and Bazemore — all of whom, like Thomas, are age 32 or older.

And, it's always worth remembering: Stein's report could come from Thomas' camp as they try to get his name out there as the offseason winds down.
