LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga Review Scores – 83 on Metacritic

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga got Metacritic scores of 83 on PS5, 82 on Xbox Series X, and 79 on the Nintendo Switch.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga received widespread critical acclaim, being one of the favorite releases for this month of April. It's one of the critical darlings of this year, being one of the most anticipated games that have seen a long time in the development phase. It's finally here! And it feels like the long wait was justified.

Most of the critics noted how polished the game feels and how beautiful the set design and texturing the game has. It's clearly the best LEGO game to date, and it being a Star Wars game is just the icing on the cake. It retains the same kind of LEGO humor that previous LEGO games had, but LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has a lot of references and easter eggs for Star Wars fans to enjoy. While the retelling of the stories isn't always 1 is to 1, the game's humor makes up for it. And it not replicating the films' stories as accurately as possible is also a design choice, as LEGO Star Wars tend to lean more on the witty and the silly.

VGC gave the game a perfect 5/5 star rating. In their review, they say: “By the time credits rolled on The Rise of Skywalker and the twin suns of Tatooine set for probably the final time in Lego form, it was a melancholic moment for a franchise that has transcended generations, both in video games and in real life. But, with all of the galaxy to explore, and about 1 billion collectables to find, it wasn’t the end. To paraphrase a legendary Jedi, we’d only just taken our first steps into a larger world.” VGC's review notes that the game has a lot of collectibles to keep both adults and kids busy and an almost endless galaxy for players to explore.

Impulse Gamer gave the game a 4.9/5 stars, leaving only half a star from its Gameplay to keep it from being a perfect game. Their review reads: “Ultimately, if you like the Lego series of games then there’s a high probability that you will like this… if you also like the Star Wars films (even just some of them) then this should be high on your list of items to purchase. It’s certainly a cheaper way to enjoy a bunch of Lego sets with the ability to play through your favourite parts of the Star Wars films.” If you're a fan of both LEGO and Star Wars, then picking this game up is a no-brainer.

DEXERTO‘s review has a 9/10 rating, with a review that reads: “LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker saga is a graphically beautiful, sprawling sandbox game that blends humor together with more serious moments of the saga’s lore, all while providing a dizzying amount of content to chew through. The game may not reinvent the wheel, but every gameplay feature from platforming to collectibles, classes and the open-world style of play is done masterfully. Without a doubt, this is a franchise-defining game for LEGO video games, and I personally cannot wait to see what the developers do next.”

Clearly, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga did not add much in terms of pushing genre conventions forward. However, it did introduce video game standards to an old product to make it feel fresh, instead of making the game feel like a rehash of older LEGO games that we've played countless times before. It may not be a fresh new take on the game franchise, but it's spruced up to make it feel like an actual new game rather than a quick cash grab.

VG24/7 gave LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga review scores of 4/5 Stars, with a review that says: “The sheer amount of different systems means that some are inevitably better than others – the aforementioned podracing sequence feels a little bit on rails for instance – but again, any pain points are almost over before they start. Really, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is all the action from the Star Wars series, swaddled in the slapstick silliness LEGO has become known for in entertainment. While it’s not a 1-to-1 retelling and your favourite moment might have been left in the toy chest, it’s a knowing showcase of Star Wars’ place in pop culture – memes and all – in a deep, but accessible package.”

Still, the game has its target audience, and not everyone would find the child-friendly game a great pick. PlayStation Universe warns: The Skywalker Saga is fun but problematic. In their review that gave the game a measly 7/10, PlayStation Universe says: “LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga does a lot of things right that make it the best LEGO Star Wars game, and LEGO game to date. But it's [sic] level structure and pacing leave something to be desired more often than not, and co-op play has seemingly gotten far less care and attention than it deserved, putting a damper on what is otherwise a hilarious and fun experience.”

Finally, the Norwegian website Gamer.no gave the game a 6/10, saying that the game is a huge package with lots of fun, but also a lot of boring. In the review, they said: “Even now, I'm having more fun with the very first Lego Star Wars game, which actually offered challenges and really good flow. That doesn't mean The Skywalker Saga isn't fun – in fact, it's really fun at times, the production value is on the ceiling, and you can get many hours out of the game if you're a real collectible fanatic or a curious kid who loves both Lego and Star Wars. But the game is nowhere near the evolution I had hoped for after all these years, but it does implement changes that take the series a few steps back. That's a shame, for a game that looks as gorgeous as this really deserves a more exciting, fun, and innovative interpretation of the Star Wars movies than what we get served here.”

Conclusion: Is LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga Worth It?

Franchise games suffer the course of carrying a heavy weight of expectations – not only to live up to the best in the series but also to carry it forward to the path of improvement. On the other hand, highly-anticipated games suffer from higher expectations compared to other releases, given that people have been waiting for the release for a long time and have had the time to develop these expectations. However, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has been able to weather through both. As the latest LEGO game and the latest in the long-running LEGO Star Wars franchise, it's a great step forward for the series – even though it doesn't necessarily offer enough innovation for the genre itself. As for a game that has been announced at E3 2019, it's been one of the most highly-anticipated game releases in recent years. Add to that the pressure of making things work with Traveler's Tale's new proprietary engine NTT, this gave LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga a lot of hurdles to overcome. Thankfully for them and for us gamers, they passed with flying colors. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is a great game to pick up this Summer, and we're sure that it'll be a gift that keeps on giving until the end of this year.
