The Detroit Lions stomped into Arrowhead on Thursday night and proved they're for real, beating Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20. The defense put on an absolute display while the offense also proved their worth. But one of the topics of conversation throughout and after the contest was the lack of touches for rookie running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who played a mere 19 offensive snaps. For reference, David Montgomery played 55.

Gibbs was productive with his minutes though, rushing for six yards per carry and reeling in two catches for 18 yards. And if there was any concern about his minimal playing time, head coach Dan Campbell made it clear the 12th overall pick is a big part of Detroit's plans. They simply want to ease some of these guys into things.

Via Pride of Detroit:

“Gibbs, he’s pretty electric, and he’s only going to get better,” Campbell said. “And he’s going to get a bigger piece of pie as we move forward.”

“We really didn’t want to overload any of those guys. I think it’s important you go in and let them get a feel of what it’s going to be like. That’s the first one,” Campbell said. “Let’s go in and make sure that the guys that have been around here, the guys that have taken a load for us, that we’ve been in games with, they take on a bigger load, and we work these rookies in and get them a feel of it. Now they’ve got that one under their belt.

“So, for Jahmyr Gibbs, he’ll begin to get more touches now. That was just the beginning last night.”

That will be music to Lions' fans ears. That Montgomery-Gibbs duo could be really special in 2023 and Gibbs also looks to more than just a back for Campbell. A Swiss Army knife role is surely in the cards.

Keep him in your fantasy team.
