As NFL teams begin to move toward trimming their roster down to 53, the Detroit Lions have officially cut defensive back Teez Tabor, ending his chances of making the team and giving him an early head start when it comes to possibly finding another team to land on. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero was one of the first to note Tabor was released.
Tabor rose to prominence during his time at the University of Florida, where he was one of the best cornerbacks in the country. Unfortunately, it just hasn’t clicked for the young player in the NFL, as his slow speed – he posted a 4.62 40-yard dash time – dropped him out of the first round in the 2017 NFL Draft and has held him back in the league itself.
Despite the speed concerns, the Lions still took a chance on Tabor, drafting him in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft. He was named the team’s fourth cornerback in 2017, playing behind mainstays like Darius Slay, Nevin Lawson, and D.J. Hayden. Throughout his tenure with the Lions, Tabor tallied just 39 tackles and one quarterback hit, and started just five of his 22 appearances.
The Lions will now head in a different with the team, as they look for Rashaan Melvin and Darius Slay to become the team’s starting two cornerbacks. Combined with some new additions to the secondary, and Tabor simply no longer fit, and will now have to try and find a place elsewhere, or perhaps accept a role on a practice squad for another team.
