Orlando Magic rookie Franz Wagner had the game of his young NBA career on Tuesday night, becoming the first Magic rookie in 31 years to score 30 points in a game and shoot 50 percent from the field, 50 percent from three, and 100 percent from the free-throw line. The Magic youngster did so in a 127-110 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks.

The last to do so before Wagner was Dennis Scott way back in the year 1990. While most of you were not even born yet, Dennis Scott was getting his buckets. But that was 31 years ago and Tuesday night was about the kid from Germany.

Coming into this game, Wagner was averaging 15.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game and shooting 44 percent from the field, 35 percent from three, and 85 percent from the free-throw line so far on the 2021 season. Those numbers would normally have him in the rookie of the year conversation, and he still might be, but that title must go to Cleveland Cavaliers big man Evan Mobley at the moment.

Who knows? Maybe a super-strong finish to the last 60 percent of the season will propel Wagner into the award, and if he does, it will likely be this game that we all look back upon as the springboard for Wagner's ascension to the top of the rookie rankings. It could also turn out to be just a blip on the radar of what turns out to be a good-but-not-great season. It all will be determined by how Wagner handles the success of this game and uses it to either take a step forward or take a step back.
