Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard had been pushing for a move to Newcastle United during the January transfer window after being frequently overlooked throughout the Premier League campaign. Ultimately, no move ever materialized, with Ralf Rangnick suggesting it was the result of the notorious Mason Greenwood situation, as well as an inability to agree to terms with Newcastle. On Thursday, Rangnick claimed that Lingard approached him to request some time away from the club in order to clear his head, however, the 28-year-old has fired back via Twitter to suggest that's not what went down. Lingard issued a statement via Twitter sharing his side of the story.

According to Lingard's version of events, Manchester United were the ones who advised him to take some time away from the club, alleging personal reasons. Lingard insists his headspace is “clear” and that he's committed to being a professional when called upon by the club.  Lingard got ahead of the rumors regarding his request to take some time off and made clear that it was not something he had requested, but rather it was the club that suggested it for him.

In 2021-22, Lingard has effectively been frozen out of the Manchester United team sheet, once again. The Englishman has featured in nine matches in Premier League play through the team's first 22 games, never earning a start and seeing a grand total of 97 minutes on the pitch. He's scored two goals this year in his limited opportunity.

After getting the green light for a loan switch to West Ham in last year's January window, Lingard enjoyed a tremendous spell with the Hammers, scoring nine goals and assisting four more in just 16 matches. Despite his performances for the London-based club, Rangnick has not made room for him in his plans.
