Twitter erupted over a potential goaltending call during a matchup between Michigan State basketball and the Marquette Golden Eagles in March Madness on Sunday.

A driving layup by Marquette guard Tyler Kolek was contested and deflected by Michigan State center Mady Sissoko. The shot would have put the Golden Eagles within three points of the Spartans with under two minutes remaining if the call had been made.

The potential no-call sent Twitter into a frenzy on Sunday.

The Spartans ended the night with a nine-point victory over Marquette in the round of 32, giving them a matchup against the Kansas State Wildcats in the Sweet 16. The NCAA men's basketball tournament will be the second since March Madness's expansion in 1985 to be without Kentucky, Duke, or North Carolina in the Sweet 16 after Kentucky lost to Kansas State on Sunday, ESPN Stats and Info wrote in a Sunday tweet.

Marquette earned a two-seed in the tournament after they took a 29-5 overall record and a 17-3 record against conference opponents. They ended the season with a 10-game win streak, capped off with a victory against St. John's in the Champ Blue Out in Fiserv Forum. They proved victorious in the Big East Championship tournament with wins over St. John's, the University of Connecticut and then-No. 15-ranked Xavier before their March Madness matchups.

Michigan State won its first 2023 March Madness game against the USC Trojans before moving on to the round of 32. USC head coach Andy Enfield had a chance to reflect on his team's performance after the loss.

“Unfortunately this game did not go as planned in the second half,” Andy Enfield said. “There was a lot of timely shot making by Michigan State and some timely misses on our part. I thought that was the difference in the game, the second half. We also had eight second half turnovers and only three at halftime.”
