The Miami Marlins are in dead last in the National League East and haven't looked all that competitive throughout the season. For that reason, many believe they'll be sellers at the trade deadline. Unfortunately, one of their star trade candidates has landed on the injured list.

Star pitcher, Jesus Luzardo finds himself on the injured list after suffering a lumbar stress reaction, according to Craig Mish of Sports Grid. Luzardo is officially on the 15-day IL. As a result, it's not likely for Miami to trade him if that was in their plans this season.

“Marlins place Pitcher Jesus Luzardo on the injured list. Second time this season. Still tons of future potential with him, and can pitch at the front [of] a rotation when healthy. I don’t anticipate him being traded next month. Probably the best course of action IMO.”

Luzardo has had a roller coaster of a season so far this year. Which, is pretty much how it's gone for the Marlins in general. So far the star pitcher has recorded a 5.00 ERA with 58 strikeouts and a 1.245 WHIP. Not the best numbers but Jesus Luzardo is still considered to be a young pitcher with a ton of potential.

This might just be the best-case scenario for the Marlins though. Although the roster could use some help offensively, the team can possibly keep Jesus Luzardo on the roster and let him develop. At the very least, he could finish this season in Miami and then become a stronger trade candidate in the offseason. But it truly depends on what the front office wants to do.

How can the Marlins get back to playoff contention?

The Marlins looked like a promising young group in the 2023 season but it's all falling apart right now. They can't get anything going offensively and the pitching rotation has been plagued by injuries. At the very least, there is some exciting young talent developing in the farm system. But a lot of those prospects won't be ready for the big leagues for another few years.

Miami might just have to be patient and wait for those prospects to reach the Majors. We've seen that strategy pay off for several teams in the league recently, as the Texas Rangers won the World Series last season with a young roster. Additionally, the Baltimore Orioles are one of the best teams in baseball with an incredibly young roster themselves.

Perhaps the front office can make a big move at the trade deadline. However, it might be best to wait until the offseason at this point. The Marlins are just 26-49 on the season as of this publishing and it doesn't look like they'll get back in playoff contention. We should expect this organization to give some of their rising prospects a chance to play in the Majors later this season to give them a taste of the bigs.

With that said, the Marlins should have better opportunities to improve the roster in the offseason. If the front office can reel in some solid talent then we could see this team right back in the mix by 2025.
