As Dirk Nowitzki embarks on his 20th season in the NBA, various factors come into play as Nowitzki assesses his future in the league.

According to Eddie Sefco of SportsDay, Nowitzki had this to say while hosting his annual pro-celebrity tennis classic at SMU in Dallas:

“If I miss another 30 to 40 games in a row, then obviously, it's not meant to be,” he said. “But if I can stay sort of healthy like I did at the end of the season, when I thought I moved OK and had some good games, then maybe we'll do two more [seasons]. But we'll see how it goes.”

Will he ever be able to play or move the way he once did? At 39 years old, the answer is likely not. But, for players and fans to give up on Nowitzki would be a rash decision.

With younger talent taking the NBA by storm, veterans such as Nowitzki must adapt to the faster pace the game is being played at, and if that proves to be of great difficulty for the German, retiring from the game of basketball may be the way to go.

However, Dirk has not showed any signs of letting up, as he worked hard to come back at the end of the 2016-17 season. Over this offseason, Nowitzki has recovered from his lingering injuries fully and reportedly come back even stronger.

“It's been a long summer, way too long,” he said. “I've been busting my butt trying to get ready, get in game shape. I've progressed well, and I'm looking forward to camp and play some of those new guys. …

“I don't anticipate any problems, but you know, at 39, I guess anything is possible.”

Whatever the future may hold, Nowitzki seems to be determined on coming back focused and healthier this upcoming season.
