Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki reportedly will make his season debut either Thursday against the Phoenix Suns or Sunday versus the Sacramento Kings, according to Tim MacMahon of ESPN.

Dirk Nowitzki underwent ankle surgery in April, but his recovery is going slower than expected. Thursday's game against the Suns is in Phoenix, while Sunday's game versus the Kings is in Dallas.

In 77 regular season games for the Mavs last season, Nowitzki averaged 12.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the field, 40.9 percent from 3-point range and 89.8 percent from the free-throw line.

This year is Nowitzki’s 21st campaign with the Mavs, setting an NBA record for the most seasons with a single team by a player. Kobe Bryant is second, as the 18-time All-Star and five-time NBA champion played 20 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.

It would make sense for Nowitzki to make his season debut at home against the Kings. The fans in Dallas are itching to see Nowitzki play. Even though rookie phenom Luka Doncic has gotten off to a stellar start to his NBA career, Mavs Nation’s heart is still and always will be with Dirk.

Dallas entered Wednesday with a record of 14-11, seventh place in the Western Conference.
