The New York Mets have not had the season they were expecting heading into 2023, and legendary shortstop Carlos Correa is taking notice. The Mets have struggled for essentially all of the 2023 season, currently sitting at a measly 64-75, and they are currently preparing for a matchup with Correa and his Minnesota Twins this weekend.

Correa was recently asked about the matchup and how his team can stay focused when playing a team that is essentially out of postseason contention.

“The Mets don’t have a chance to make the playoffs?” Correa asked, per Mike Puma of the New York Post. “Really? I didn’t know that. I know they have a great team over there. I know they got rid of some good pieces.”

The “good pieces” that Correa references would probably be pitchers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer. Both aces were recently unloaded by the team to the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers, respectively. The moves came as a result of what has been an atrocious campaign for New York in 2023.

The Mets had a great regular season in 2022. The team won 101 games and tied the Atlanta Braves atop the division lead. However, the campaign ended in disappointment with a Wild Card flameout loss to the San Diego Padres.

Expectations were sky-high heading into 2023, but New York never seemed to be able to get off the ground. In unloading both Scherzer and Verlander, the Mets essentially waved the white flag for 2023 and turned their eyes to next year.

Game 1 against the Twins is slated for Friday evening.
