The New York Mets were expecting to open the season with their newly established one-two punch on the mound in Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. That won't be the case, however, as deGrom is dealing with a stress reaction to his right scapula, which will force him to miss his Opening Day start. Speaking on the injury for the first time on Sunday, deGrom revealed he was frustrated by the injury, via Mike Puma.

deGrom admitted he is “really frustrated” regarding the injury situation, which seemingly appeared out of nowhere. When asked about his future with the organization, and whether his injury would impact his plans to opt out of his current deal after the 2022 season, deGrom indicated nothing had changed. deGrom previously declared his intentions to opt out of his contract after this season, though he expressed his desire to re-sign with the Mets and remain in New York “for life.”

Despite being forced to miss a chunk of the 2022 MLB season, deGrom is sticking to his guns regarding that plan. As of now, deGrom is without a timetable to return to the mound, a huge blow for the Mets. The initial expectation is that deGrom will be shut down from throwing for about four weeks before being re-evaluated by the organization, in hopes that he can return to the mound without any future issues.

Last season, deGrom enjoyed one of the best starts of a season in MLB history, before an injury knocked him out for the second half of the season. He posted a 7-2 record with a 1.08 ERA and 146 strikeouts across 92 innings, logging 15 sensational starts for the team.
