To say the New York Mets underachieved this season with be an understatement. But while playoffs might be out of the picture, the Mets still wanted to ensure they ended their season in exciting fashion.

In doing so, New York is planning to call up top prospect Brett Baty on Friday, via Mike Mayer of Metsmerized. Baty's call up corresponds with MLB rosters expanding at the start of September.

With the Mets out of contention, they have more of an incentive to see what their future might hold. Getting another chance in the majors, Baty will have an opportunity to prove why he should start next season with the big league club.

To earn that opportunity, Baty will look to improve on the performance he put on with the Mets earlier this season. Through 86 games, Baty hit just .216 with seven home runs and 27 RBI. Including his first 11 games in the majors back in 2022, Baty is hitting .212 with nine home runs and 32 RBI through his first 97 games with the Mets.

However, Baty is still just 23-years-old. He ranked as the team's second-best prospect behind just Francisco Alvarez heading into the season, via MLB Pipeline. Furthermore, Baty has tore it up at the Triple-A level this season, hitting .298 with 10 home runs and 31 RBI through 26 games.

At 61-73 the Mets won't be competing for anything this season. However, they'll at least get a solid look at the potentially near future of their ball club. Brett Baty is looking for his name to be written into New York's future plans in pen. The end of the season will give the top prospect an opportunity to once again prove he belongs.
