There has been a lot of speculation in recent weeks regarding the New York Mets possibly trading first baseman Pete Alonso this winter rather than extending him, but a recent report seems to indicate that the Mets plan on keeping Alonso in the fold for 2024.

“Over the past few weeks, as Alonso trade rumors have congealed into a perception of near inevitability, the reaction among the Mets executives can be best summarized by two words: Surprised and confused,” Andy Martino of SNY reported. “While not ruling out the chance of the proverbial being ‘blown away' by an offer this winter, the team does not plan to actively shop Alonso.”

Although there has been some talk about the Mets punting on competing in 2024, Martino's reporting indicates the contrary.

“The reason is straightforward: The Mets are serious about fielding a competitive roster next season, and see Alonso as a necessary part of that,” Martino reported. “Their current inclination is to keep him until free agency, then negotiate with him as they did with Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo (who they retained) and Jacob deGrom (who they did not).”

For many fans, Pete Alonso is their favorite player, so the recent rumors upset much of the fanbase. Martino's recent latest should calm some fans.

It will be intriguing to see if Alonso eventually re-signs with the team line Edwin Diaz and Brandon Nimmo did, or if he will leave in free agency like Jacob deGrom.

The Mets have some questions to answer over the next few years as they attempt to re-tool their roster.
