New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard's road to recovery from Tommy John surgery is set to take another pivotal step.
As noted by Newsday Sports' Tim Healey, Syndergaard will make a key rehab appearance on Sunday with the High-A Brooklyn Cyclones. The veteran Mets starter is slated to go at least one-plus innings in the game.
This comes after Syndergaard made a notable appearance for the Mets' High-A team on Thursday, which was his first in-game action since being shut down in May due to right elbow inflammation. He allowed one home run and recorded 16 pitches over his inning of work against the Aberdeen Ironbirds.
The Mets have been cautious with Syndergaard's injury rebab process ever since he underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2020.
Syndergaard has also been walking a tightrope with his rehab stints along the way. He made note on Thursday that on the advice of the Mets' team doctors, he would not be throwing any more breaking pitches for the remainder of this season. Thus, he will solely be relying on his two fastball pitches and changeup as he continues to work towards a return to the majors in the coming month.
Still, the Mets have yet to provide for a final declaration on Syndergaard's possible availability for this season. Earlier this year, he was on par to make a return to the Mets' starting rotation in June, but such plans were scrapped after he suffered the setback following his May rehab start.
Mets general manager Zack Scott recently mentioned that Syndergaard could come out of the bullpen when he is given the green light to return to in-game action.
At this point in the stretch run of the season, the Mets need any help that they can get, especially as they currently sit at third place in the NL East with a 61-66 record.
