With the MLB trade deadline now just a month away, the New York Mets are already looking at the possibility of bolstering their lineup.
For one, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman noted that the Mets are among the teams that have checked in on Baltimore Orioles' Trey Mancini. Heyman added that the trade market for the keen contact hitter has been “heating up.”
More so, Heyman suggested that the Mets could use another hitter ahead of this season’s MLB trade deadline. He listed the likes of Kansas City Royals’ Andrew Benintendi and Washington Nationals’ Josh Bell as players who would “fit” for the current NL East leaders.
On Mancini’s part, he has been among the bright spots on an Orioles team that currently sits in last place in the AL East standings with a 35-42 record, posting a .280 batting average to go along with 30 RBI recorded in 68 games played. He has had his fair share of struggles at the plate amid the Orioles’ recent surge, including his .229 batting average in the month of June.
As it stands, Mancini has a $10 million mutual option for the 2023 campaign that includes a $250,000 buyout. The versatile outfielder has been linked with a possible extension deal, but a report ahead of the season did note that he has not engaged in talks with team officials for such an agreement.
Mancini has featured out at first base, left field and right field for the Orioles this year, but he has primarily been called upon to be a designated hitter, with 37 starts coming at the position. With the roller-coaster seasons from J.D. Davis and Dominic Smith, Mancini could very well be the Mets’ everyday DH if they acquire him in the coming weeks.
Heyman recently mentioned that Mancini “will likely go” before the MLB trade deadline, so it remains to be seen on whether the Mets plan to soon go all out to haul him in an effort to bolster their production from within their lineup.
The Mets boast a 47-29 record, and they are now set for a three-game home series with the Texas Rangers beginning on Friday.
