The New York Mets continue to befuddle everyone.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Mets are interested in acquiring right-handed starting pitcher Marcus Stroman from the Toronto Blue Jays. In order to land him, the Mets may trade fellow righty Noah Syndergaard and then use the pieces they receive in return to swing a deal for Stroman.

The San Diego Padres are rumored to be a possible destination for Syndergaard.

If you're wondering how this makes any sense at all, it really doesn't, but this is the Mets we are talking about here.

Now, obviously, this sounds like somewhat of a long shot to actually happen, as it would involve a whole lot of moving parts. But the fact that the Mets might even be considering this is confusing, to say the least.

The general consensus has been that New York wants to sell at the trade deadline, as the Mets are clearly not a contender in the National League in spite of their recent stretch of solid play.

So, it would clearly make sense, then, for New York to trade Syndergaard for some prospects and begin rebuilding. The idea that the Mets could swing a deal for Syndergaard and then turn around and trade for Stroman doesn't seem to add up.

The main thing to draw from all of this seems to be that New York is, in fact, intent on trying to trade Syndergaard one way or another, so it does look like the 26-year-old may be nearing his end as a Met.

New York currently owns a record of 49-55.
