The New York Mets are all-in on the 2022 season and are looking to ensure there's not a single weak spot on the roster. Despite the big-money acquisition of Max Scherzer this offseason, Steve Cohen and Co. aren't done upgrading the team's arms. According to Pat Ragazzo, the Mets are placing infielder Jeff McNeil on the trading block in hopes of adding more pitching talent.

Considering MLB teams are barred from making transactions during the lockout, any move involving McNeil will have to wait until the league resumes. However, whenever the lockout does come to an end, McNeil's days in a Mets' uniform seem likely to be numbered.

Ragazzo's report indicated that there are several teams who would be interested in acquiring McNeil from New York, who is under a team-friendly contract for the next three years. It seems an inopportune time for the Mets to try to offload McNeil, considering he's coming off the worst season of his MLB career. In what was a significant down-year in 2021 for the 29-year-old, the infielder slashed .251/.319/.360 with just seven home runs and 35 RBI across 120 games.

McNeil was an All-Star in 2019, having hit 23 home runs and 75 RBI while posting a terrific .916 OPS. He logged 162 hits in 133 games while playing second base, third base and left field for the Mets.

With the team's intentions of winning the World Series in 2022, the organization reportedly deems McNeil surplus to requirements, and will look to flip the veteran in order to bolster their pitching staff. It's do or die for the Mets, and Cohen isn't afraid to do whatever it takes to put the team in the best position for success.
