Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Mets had a complete makeover from last year to this year. They are 34-37 this season and have won six straight heading into this matchup. Their bats have jumped up to above average after struggling earlier this season, while their pitching has struggled this season. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Starling Marte, and Brandon Nimmo have been solid behind the plate despite their struggles on offense. Luis Severino, Tylor Megill, and Jose Butto have been solid despite the staff struggling. The Mets have struggled this season, but they are playing better recently leading into this matchup.

The Mets are starting Sean Manaea on the mound and he has a 4-3 record, a 4.11 ERA, and a 1.32 WHIP. Manaea has allowed 33 runs on 61 hits with 26 walks and 67 strikeouts through 65.2 innings. In the 13 games that he has started, the Mets are 8-5. This is a favorable matchup for him because the Rangers offense has plummeted to the bottom half of the MLB. Manaea has been a key piece for the Mets on the mound, so this should be an interesting matchup for him in Texas.

The Mets have not been great behind the plate, but have jumped into being an above-average offense. They have a .247 batting average after having a .238 batting average last season. Starling Marte, Pete Alonso, Brandon Nimmo, and Francisco Lindor led the way in most batting categories this season. Nimmo leads in RBI at 39 and in OBP at .356. Then, Marte leads in batting average at .281, Alonso leads in home runs at 15, and Lindor leads in total hits at 69. They get a favorable matchup against Heaney for the Rangers because he has been inconsistent pitching-wise.

Why The Rangers Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Rangers have been inconsistent since winning the World Series last year on their way to a 33-39 record. They enter this matchup, having lost four games in a row. They have dipped in batting average and are in the bottom half of the MLB with their bats, and then the same for their pitching. This offense is led by sluggers Adolis Garcia, Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Josh Smith. This offense is loaded overall with talent. Their pitching needs to play better overall. Nathan Eovaldi has taken center stage on the mound this season, but Jon Gray and Michael Lorenzen have also been decent pitching-wise.

The Rangers are starting Andrew Heaney on the mound and he has a 2-8 record, a 4.19 ERA, and a 1.32 WHIP. Through 66.2 innings this season, he has allowed 36 runs on 70 hits with 18 walks and 62 strikeouts. Heaney has played in 14 games this season and the Rangers are 3-11 in those games. Heaney has had a solid season on the mound but has lacked consistency and his team has not been able to help him as much. He gets a decent matchup in this game against a red-hot Mets offense, but lacks talent overall.

The Rangers' offense has taken a huge dip recently. They are 18th in team batting average at .237 after finishing as one of the best in the MLB with a .263 batting average last year. The offense is led by Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, and Josh Smith in most batting categories. Smith leads in batting average at .294 and in OBP at .384. Semien leads in RBI at 40 and in total hits at 75. Finally, Seager leads in home runs at 14. The Rangers' offense can match up with anyone in the MLB talent-wise, but they get a difficult matchup against Sean Manaea on the mound for the Mets in this game.

Final Mets-Rangers Prediction & Pick

The Mets are red-hot right now and streaking heading into this game with six wins in a row. The pitching matchup is very even with Manaea and Heaney having solid seasons on the mound. The Mets are playing better than the Rangers behind the plate currently, but Texas has more talent. It should be very close, so expect Heaney to be the key and help the Rangers cover at home against a Mets team that has been very hot recently.
