The Miami Dolphins haven't won many games this season but there actually be an argument made that this season was a success because not many people even expected them to win this many games. There was some good and bad to take away from this season, let's breakdown the five biggest.

5. The defense is going to take the longest to improve

Once the Dolphins get a quarterback their offense has pieces around it to be successful, the same thing can't be said about the defense. Heading into Week 17 the Dolphins are giving up 31.3 points and over 400 yards of total offense per game.

There really isn't any star players the defense can be built around and it's probably going to take a few more years before the team has that straightened out. The Dolphins defense lost the team a lot of games this season and going forward that probably isn't going to change.

4. Dolphins don't have their starting RB next season on their roster

The Dolphins are going to need to add their starting running back this offseason either through the draft or free agency. Patrick Laird and Myles Gaskin have been fine this season, but as the rest of the team continues to improve they need running backs who do the same. There are many other holes the team needs to fill but running back needs to be near the top.

3. Ryan Fitzpatrick can still be a solid NFL quarterback

Most believed Ryan Fitzpatrick's career was done a few years ago but he has proven again this season that he is still solid. On the season he has thrown for 3,209 yards, 19 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. The stats don't exactly jump off the page but he put the team in good positions to win.

He also made watching the Dolphins fun, something that wasn't always the case.

2. The Dolphins got the coaching hire right

There were a lot of questions early in the season about Brian Flores but this is a guy who could bring the team back to a playoff contender. There have been some comparisons to Brett Brown in Philadelphia and that makes a lot of sense.

This is a guy the players really respect and plays hard for, and once he gets some good talent on this squad he could do some special things. He has gotten a lot out of the players not many expected much from.

1. Long term- they are going to regret being as good as they were this season

The Dolphins did win some games this season, and in the end they actually won too many games. Even though Fitzpatrick had a nice season, he isn't the long term option and the team needs to find their future quarterback.

If the Dolphins would have lost enough to get the number one pick they could have selected Joe Burrow and he could have been that guy. Instead, the Dolphins are going to be picking a few spots after Burrow is gone and the team might still have some questions heading into next season surrounding their quarterback.
