A Minecraft RTS game is reportedly in development, according to video game journalist Jeff Gerstmann, which he revealed on-stream.
Giant Bomb co-founder and former GameSpot editorial director Jeff Gerstmann, a Minecraft real-time strategy is currently in the works at Mojang Studios. During one of his recent streams on Twitch (h/t GameSpot), Gerstmann claimed that he has seen screenshots of the project. “There's a new Minecraft game in development,” Gerstmann says, “and I don't know if this is something that is going to get announced at [the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase on June 12], but there is a new Minecraft spin-off in the works.” He then described what he was shown, and apparently, Microsoft is putting it out under an undisclosed code name while testing it. He says that the game appears to be a Minecraft RTS spin-off, except players control a “Steve-esque” character in the field, which players use to indirectly construct buildings.
Piglins appear to be the main antagonists in the game, one of the many mobs in the Minecraft world. The game will also feature a story and cutscenes.
Minecraft fans shouldn't get excited yet, though, as Gerstmann suggests that the game is too early into development that it won't be ready to be shown to the public just yet. So, don't expect the Minecraft RTS game to come up in the upcoming Game Fest for now.
Double Eleven, co-developers of Minecraft Dungeons, is currently hiring for a major IP as well, under the RTS label, which gives more credence to Gerstmann's claims.
