Why The Cubs Could Cover The Spread
The Chicago Cubs have been playing very well over the past few weeks and brought a five-game winning streak into this series. Although the Cubs dropped the series opener, they are 38-28 and currently leading the National League Central division. Chicago has been much better at home this season, but are beginning to improve their play on the road. The Cubs score 4.58 runs per game, which is good for 11th in the Majors. They allow the eighth-fewest runs as well and are one of the most complete clubs in the league.
Chicago will turn to right-hander Alec Mills for the second game of this series. Mills is currently 2-0 with a 6.08 ERA and 15 strikeouts through 13 appearances and one start. The right-hander recently returned from the IL and has spent the majority of the year in the bullpen. Mills allowed two runs over four innings in his only other start this season against the Brewers. He was 5-5 with a 4.48 ERA as a starter in 2020.

The New York Mets have been one of the most exciting teams to watch in baseball this season. They have been playing especially well of late and will be going for their fourth win in five games. The Mets currently hold a three-game lead in the National League East division despite a plethora of key injuries. New York will turn to tall right-hander Taijuan Walker for the second game of the series. Walker has been terrific since coming over to the Mets with a 5-2 record and 2.07 ERA. He has faced some control issues, which haven't impacted his overall success. Walker has been one of the best starting pitchers in the league this season and certainly looks to be one of the best signings of the offseason. The right-hander has been dealing lately with a 1.32 ERA in his last six starts.

The New York Mets continue to win games despite their offensive struggles and injuries. The pitching staff is one of the best in the league and they have one of the best starters in Taijuan Walker going tonight. Walker has been on a tear and his team has played much better at home this season. Although the Mets offense hasn't impressed, they will have a favorable matchup against a struggling right-hander in Alec Mills. New York has picked up the slack with 24 runs over their last four games and should have no problem building on the recent stretch on Tuesday night.
