Dallas Keuchel gets the start for the Diamondbacks, while Austin Gomber takes the bump for the Rockies.

Dallas Keuchel has a 7.93 ERA. He posted a 7.88 ERA in eight starts for the White Sox this season. After getting shelled on May 26 against the Red Sox (six runs allowed in two innings), he was released. The Diamondbacks picked him up, and on June 26, he made his first start for Arizona. He went up against the Tigers, whom he was very familiar with due to his stint with the White Sox. He allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings, which was consistent with his subpar 2022 season. Everyone is waiting to see if Keuchel can somehow turn the corner or at least become a four-run ERA pitcher instead of the eight-run ERA pitcher he has been this year. Coors Field is obviously not the best place for him to engineer a turnaround, but maybe he can pull a surprise in this appearance on Saturday evening.

Austin Gomber has a 6.55 ERA. In the month of June, his ERA was exactly nine runs. He pitched just 20 innings in five starts — an average of only four innings per start — and gave up 20 runs. He got shredded. Now he has to find a way to get back on the beam against an Arizona batting order which erupted for nine runs on Friday night in Coors Field. Gomber's last two appearances did not go longer than 2 2/3 innings. He has to make some adjustments on the fly and find answers to his recent problems.

Why The Diamondbacks Could Cover the Spread

Arizona hammered Colorado 9-3 on Friday, with a lot of different hitters up and down the batting order making significant contributions. The Diamondbacks hit home runs on pull shots and to the opposite field. They sprayed the ball around the yard and punished mistakes made by Colorado relief pitchers. This batting order has struggled for most of the year, but it should be able to feast on Austin Gomber, who has been bad in the past month of the season. Gomber has to show he can improve before anyone gives him the benefit of the doubt.

Why The Rockies Could Cover the Spread

After getting trounced in their last two games, the Rockies are in a good bounce-back spot here on Saturday. As bads as Austin Gomber is, Dallas Keuchel is even harder to trust as a pitcher. Keuchel would be untrustworthy in any situation. Putting him in Coors Field is as good a situation as the Rockies could possibly hope for.

Final Diamondbacks-Rockies Prediction & Pick

If you don't trust either pitcher, what is the obvious play? The over, of course. Friday's game had 12 runs, and that was with one of the starters — Arizona's Merrill Kelly — having a good game. These starters are both struggling in a big way. It's very hard to see how this game won't be 4-4 or 5-3 in the fourth or fifth inning. Neither bullpen is exceptionally strong. Take the over and don't look back.
