The Los Angeles Dodgers take on the Colorado Rockies. Check out our MLB odds series for our Dodgers Rockies prediction and pick.
Julio Urias gets the assignment for the Dodgers, while German Marquez takes the hill for the Rockies.

Julio Urias has a 2.48 ERA. He has been a rock for the Dodgers this year while Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buehler have dealt with injuries. Urias has allowed more than one run only twice in his last seven starts, more than two runs only once. That is elite-level consistency for a team which has endured a lot of hitting slumps and pitching injuries this year. The value of Urias' stability and dependability is hard to easily measure. The Dodgers would be in a far worse place without his professionalism and clarity on the mound.

German Marquez has a 5.58 ERA, but he is clearly getting better. Marquez posted a 6.83 ERA for the month of May. In June, his ERA is just 4.40, and that includes a bad start at the beginning of the month. In his last four starts, Marquez is pitching close to a three-run ERA mark, giving up nine earned runs in his last 25 2/3 innings. Whatever problems plagued him earlier in the year, Marquez has made adjustments and has been able to pitch with fewer men on base in recent weeks. In his last outing, Marquez was genuinely dominant, throwing 7 2/3 scoreless innings against the Twins and allowing only three hits. It was surprising that he was that overwhelming, but it didn't come out of nowhere. Marquez had definitely improved in his previous few outings and has been growing in confidence. We'll see if he can take the next step here against the ultimate challenge for any N.L. West pitcher: the Dodgers.

Why The Dodgers Could Cover the Spread

The Dodgers have lost two straight to the Rockies. It would defy the odds if they lost a third straight game in Denver to one of the two N.L. West teams which is buried in the standings with little to no shot of a wild card spot. The Dodgers were jet-lagged on Monday when they stumbled into town from Atlanta after a late-night Sunday game which went 11 innings, but then on Tuesday, they played another bad game in a loss which was a lot harder to explain. The Dodgers have gone through their share of lulls and ruts this season, but they do bust out of them. This is an obvious bust-out spot for them, and the reliability of Julio Urias on the mound gives them a great chance to get back on track.

Why The Rockies Could Cover the Spread

You would think the Rockies are about to get hammered after beating the Dodgers twice. Surely the pendulum is going to swing back and knock them in the face. The laws of averages are going to balance out here. However, Colorado is a weird team. The Rockies recently swept the Padres at Coors Field. They then got swept by the Marlins. The Dodgers, meanwhile, are 1-5 against the Pittsburgh Pirates and got swept by the Bucs at home this season. The idea that the Dodgers are going to avoid a sweep certainly makes sense, but the Dodgers have lost multiple times this year in situations when the odds seemed to heavily favor them. Also: German Marquez is a far better pitcher than he was one month ago. That matters.

Final Dodgers-Rockies Prediction & Pick

A Dodger pick makes plenty of sense, but the best play is the under. Coors Field draws totals of 11 to 12 runs, and the overs have not been hitting recently. Stick with the under.

Final Dodgers-Rockies Prediction & Pick: Under 11.5
