The Chicago Cubs and former Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins are reportedly discussing a contract, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Most people around the MLB world expect Hoskins to sign a one-year deal after missing all of 2023 due to an injury. This would allow him to potentially earn a lucrative, long-term contract next offseason with a bounce back performance in 2024. However, Morosi notes that both one-year and multi-year contracts have been discussed.

Will Rhys Hoskins sign with the Cubs?

Rhys Hoskins Phillies

The chances of Rhys Hoskins returning to the Phillies are slim after it was revealed that Bryce Harper will likely remain at first base. Harper's presence at the position would force Hoskins to either change positions or become a primary DH, both of which are unlikely.

So now Hoskins is looking for a new ball club. The Cubs could use a powerful first baseman like Hoskins in the lineup, so the move makes sense.

Hoskins, 30, is a talented player with an impressive MLB track record. He offers power and on-base ability from the right-side of the plate to go along with respectable defense. The Cubs will surely have competition when it comes to the Rhys Hoskins sweepstakes in MLB free agency.

More Cubs updates

The Cubs have been among the teams mentioned as Shohei Ohtani suitors. A recent report suggested that Chicago's odds of signing the superstar are slim, however.

There is still an outside chance that the Cubs will try to make Shohei Ohtani an offer he cannot refuse. Fans should not get their hopes up though.

In other news, Chicago has been linked to interesting trades. Tyler Glasnow of the Tampa Bay Rays is believed to be an option for the Cubs. The right-hander would immediately become a pivotal part of the team's rotation if a deal comes to fruition.

Chicago's offseason will be intriguing to follow moving forward. After narrowly missing the postseason in 2023, and with stars such as Marcus Stroman and Cody Bellinger in free agency, the Cubs have questions to answer.
