After making a run to the World Series, the Arizona Diamondbacks looked to add some power into their lineup. But with that plan failing to come to fruition, the Diamondbacks are now looking for the escape button.

Arizona is open to listening to offers for third baseman Eugenio Suarez, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Suarez has a $15 million club option for the 2025 season, but the Diamondbacks don't plan on exercising it.

Suarez came to Arizona in a trade with the Seattle Mariners prior to the 2024 season. During the 2023 campaign, he hit .232 with 22 home runs and 96 RBIs. The batting average wasn't appealing, and the AL-leading 214 strikeouts were appalling, but at least Suarez had pop.

Through his first 64 games with the Diamondbacks, Suarez is hitting .200 with five home runs and 29 RBIs. The third baseman has left the yard once every 45 at-bats. He ranks fifth on the team in home runs, but that isn't saying much when Arizona ranks 21st in the league with 62 long balls total.

With no plans of keeping him beyond the 2024 season, the Diamondbacks will at least see what they could get in a trade for Suarez. Perhaps a team out there believes his power will come back with a change of scenery. In that case, Arizona may receive a lottery ticket prospect in return.

At 30-35, the Diamondbacks are still trying to climb their way back into the playoff race. Eugenio Suarez might be helping the case for now, but it looks like he isn't long for Arizona.

Diamondbacks' options at 3B besides Eugenio Suarez

If the Diamondbacks are going to move on from Suarez, they need to have a proper backup plan in place for the hot corner. While Suarez has earned the majority of starts at third, Arizona would still have a few solid options to choose from without having to go outside their organization, assuming they don't get one in return for Suarez.

Kevin Newman may be known for his work in the middle infield, but the veteran has spent time in the majors playing third. He has played in 48 games in 2024, hitting .253 with two home runs, 14 RBIs and two stolen bases.

If Newman were to play third, Blaze Alexander could then be re-inserted into the lineup at shortstop. The rookie has hit .284 with three home runs, 19 RBIs and two stolen bases over his first 46 major-league games.

Perhaps the Diamondbacks could even look to the minor leagues to fill third base. Their 14th-best prospect, via MLB Pipeline, Deyvison De Los Santos, has been tearing the cover off the ball in the minor leagues. Split between Double-A and Triple-A, De Los Santos has hit .357 with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs over 55 games in 2024.

Whatever the option may be, it's clear the Diamondbacks don't see Eugenio Suarez in their future. If a team comes biting, they'll be willing to deal the third baseman before the MLB trade deadline.
