As is often the case with free agency in the MLB, teams are waiting for the biggest names to come off the board before targeting other players. This offseason, the cream of the crop is two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani, and everyone is waiting to see where he will be playing before making their moves. Despite that, it sounds like Eduardo Rodriguez could end up coming off the board before Ohtani.

We have already seen guys like Aaron Nola and Sonny Gray sign new deals before Ohtani, but with the Winter Meetings in progress, many teams have spent their time trying to get a pulse on Ohtani's situation. There are still other top-tier free agents available, though, and one of them in Rodriguez may find a new home unexpectedly fast.

Via Jon Morosi:

“Eduardo Rodríguez's free-agent market is moving quickly, and he could reach a decision prior to Shohei Ohtani. Rodríguez is in Nashville and has had multiple in-person meetings with teams, as Jon Heyman first reported.”

Who could Eduardo Rodriguez be signing with?

Tigers, Eduardo Rodriguez

Rodriguez had a sneaky good season in 2023 with the Detroit Tigers (13-9, 3.30 ERA, 143 K, 1.15 WHIP) and he is one of the more underrated pitchers on the market currently. Rodriguez turned heads when he turned down a midseason trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers, so it's fair to wonder where he could end up since winning doesn't necessarily appear to be a massive need for him.

Quite a few teams have reportedly shown interest in Rodriguez, with the New York Mets being among the most frequently linked teams. But given the cryptic nature of this report, pretty much any team could be on the table. Nothing is set in stone, but it's looking likely that Rodriguez could be the next big domino to fall in the free agent market.
