The Chicago White Sox are reportedly interested in trading for Kansas City Royals' infielder Nicky Lopez, per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. KC struck a deal to send Adalberto Mondesi to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday. The Royals, as they remain in the midst of a rebuild, are open to trading a number of their players.

With that being said, Rosenthal revealed Kansas City's stance on Lopez and the team's plan moving forward.

“Royals not eager to move Lopez, viewing him as important depth. Team’s plan is to go with Witt Jr. SS, Massey 2B, Lopez UT. But Lopez could open at 2B if Massey is not read,” Rosenthal wrote on Twitter.

Bobby Witt Jr is regarded as the future of the ball club. He was a highly-touted prospect throughout his tenure in the minor leagues and displayed signs of stardom last year. He was likely one of the primary reasons Kansas City felt comfortable enough to trade Mondesi away.

Lopez features a decent amount of potential as well, but he may prefer a more structured role. As Rosenthal noted, the Royals could implement him as a utility man moving forward.

The White Sox, on the other hand, are also aiming to add offensive depth. They have enough talent to potentially make a run at the AL Central crown in 2023. But after their injury-plagued 2022 campaign, Chicago will not shy away from adding depth.

It will be interesting to see if the White Sox and Royals can come to terms on a Nicky Lopez-led trade.
