The Boston Red Sox snatched a loss from the jaws of victory Tuesday night, as their bullpen blew a save to suffer a 6-5 defeat in the second leg of their three-game road series against the Toronto Blue Jays.
The loss also inevitably shined even more light on the absence of Red Sox closer Tanner Houck, who was not able to be with the team on their trip north of the border because of his unvaccinated status against Covid-19. But for manager Alex Cora, he made it clear after the game that he's not one to worry about such an issue.
When asked if the situation made him more frustrated about the vaccination situation, Cora said no.
“We go with the 26 that are here, and we try to get 27 outs and we didn’t do it,” Cora said.
The Red Sox entered the ninth inning of Tuesday's game with a one-run lead and failed to add more to their cushion in the top of the ninth frame. Boston relievers Tyler Danish and Hansel Robles would then crumble under pressure, with the latter giving up the RBI single to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that gave the Blue Jays the victory.
Boston has now lost the first two games of this series and will look to salvage a victory in the third and final match of this set at Rogers Centre Wednesday night.
