Boston Red Sox utility man Kike Hernandez has been pulled off of his rehab assignment. His return to the Red Sox lineup has been delayed again, this time indefinitely.
The Red Sox are in a dog fight for a wild card berth as the All-Star Game approaches. Yes, the division isn't over but the New York Yankees have a 14.5 game lead over the Red Sox. There were hopes that Boston's utility man Hernandez would be a crucial piece in Boston taking the next step this year. Instead, he's been out of the lineup with a right hip flexor strain since early June.
On Tuesday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora shared a sentiment that does not bode well for Hernandez.

“It sucks because we felt, at one point, that he was making strides,” Alex Cora said.https://t.co/yozjTPeIZi

Boston has certainly dealt with their fair share of injuries this year. Starting pitcher Chris Sale is making his first appearance of the season Tuesday for Boston as they play at Tampa Bay. Fellow starter Michael Wacha was recently placed on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder injury. Wacha has quietly put together a great season for the Red Sox.
Boston's ace Nathan Eovaldi is also currently on the injured list. But all teams suffer from injury at one point or another. Even without Hernandez in the lineup for a little over a month, the offense has not been the problem.
Boston's pitching and bullpen in particular have been god awful. They at least received some decent news on that front. Reliver Garrett Whitlock might be activated prior to the weekend series against the Yankees. He is the best arm in the Red Sox bullpen.
