Benji Gil is reportedly not expected to return to the Los Angeles Angels, even if he did not land the managerial opening for the San Diego Padres, Jon Morosi of the MLB Network reported Sunday evening. He has spent the last two seasons as the Angels' infield coordinator.
Gil does not have experience holding a managerial role in the big leagues.
Nonetheless, he carries a ton of experience as a player in the Majors, where he played eight years. He spent four years with the Anaheim Angels between 1993 to 1997 and four straight seasons with the Texas Rangers from 2000 to 2003.
Furthermore, the 51-year-old is a champion manager in Mexico. He led the Tomateros de Culiacán of the Mexican Pacific League (LMP) to four titles in six years. In 2021, he became the inaugural manager of the expansion franchise Mariachis de Guadalajara of the Mexican Baseball League (LMB) and led the team to a 46-17 record. His efforts earned him the LMB Manager of the Year.
Furthermore, Gil helped Mexico get its best finish ever in the most recent World Baseball Classic and also managed the national team during the Summer Olympics of 2020.
The Halos also reportedly had interest in elevating Gil to the managerial role this upcoming season after firing Phil Nevin last month. Ultimately, however, the Angels went with hiring Ron Washington earlier this November.
Nevin was also in consideration for the manager job in San Diego, but the Padres signed Mike Schmidt to a two-year contract last week.
As for Gil, the search is on for his next gig. Given his experience and coaching acumen, it shouldn't take long before he finds himself back on an MLB bench.
