Reid Detmers tossed an impressive no-hitter on Tuesday night against the Tampa Rays. His outing sparked a reaction from Angels manager Joe Maddon and excited the entire Angels team. However, his no-hitter was almost erased in the 7th inning. The Rays' Brett Phillips rolled over on a delivery from Detmers and sent a ground ball to first baseman Jared Walsh. Walsh ranged to his right and bobbled the ball, allowing Phillips to reach first safely.

There is a possibility that Phillips could have beaten the ground ball out for a legitimate base hit. However, the bobble ensured that the Angels wouldn't have a play and the official scorer ruled it an error. Both Jared Walsh and Brett Phillips stated their belief that it was an error.

“I looked at it — I think I hit it like 92 mph,” Phillips stated. “Not hard enough, not far enough in the hole. There's no question that's an error. So that's a clean no-hitter.”
In all reality, the Angels probably would have got the out had Walsh fielded it cleanly. The official scorer realized that and made the correct decision. Plus, the last thing an official scorer wants to do in that situation is end a no-hitter on a hit like that.
Reid Detmers went on to complete the effort and become the youngest pitcher in Angels history to fire a no-hitter. It truly was an extraordinary performance.
