Urias joins teammate Trea Turner, who also agreed to a deal Tuesday. Turner agreed to take $21 million this season to avoid arbitration. However, both he and Urias are still set to become unrestricted free agents after this season.
Urias is coming off a breakout year. He posted an amazing 20-3 record for Los Angeles. Urias also had an equally impressive 2.96 earned run average with a 1.02 WHIP (walks + hits per inning pitched). Those are borderline Cy Young numbers for the young Dodgers starter.
Urias had always shown some flash since coming up through the Dodgers farm system, but had yet to put it all together for an entire season until 2021.
The biggest question mark for Los Angeles this season still remains the team's rotation. Three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer left for the New York Mets in free agency. Former All-Star pitcher Trevor Bauer is still facing off-the-field issues that could cost him significant playing time this year with Los Angeles.
Dodgers skipper Dave Roberts acknowledged the team is preparing to start the season without Bauer.
The top of the the team's rotation is elite, with Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, who resigned this offseason, and Urias. But beyond that, there are a lot of question marks. Los Angeles signed Tyler Anderson and Andrew Heaney, in the hopes that they can fill those voids.
But it is still possible that the Dodgers lineup is so potent, they can win 100 games with only three reliable starters.
