The Los Angeles Dodgers became the first MLB team to clinch a spot in the 2020 postseason with a win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.

Los Angeles also increased their lead over the Padres to 3.5 games in the National League West, with 10 games left to play.

It is hardly a surprise the Dodgers are the first team to claim a spot in October. Los Angeles won an NL-best 106 games last year, then acquired superstar right fielder Mookie Betts in the offseason.

Betts has played a massive role in L.A.'s success, entering Wednesday's game slashing .304/.380/.602 with 15 homers, 35 RBI and six steals. The former American League MVP also ranks fifth in fWAR, per FanGraphs.

But the Dodgers have also had a number of unsung heroes with the likes of 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy struggling to get it going.

Shortstop Corey Seager has found a power stroke, with 12 homers and a 152 OPS+. Young backstop Will Smith had some success last year, though he struggled in the Dodgers' NLDS loss against the Washington Nationals. However, Smith has a 1.024 OPS in his first 28 games.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers have gotten a big lift from a rejuvenated Clayton Kershaw (2.28 ERA), and both Dustin May and Tony Gonsolin (1.51 ERA) have been major contributors in the rotation. May's ERA improved to 2.68 after he allowed just one run and struck out six in 5.1 innings of work on Wednesday.

The bullpen has been especially stout, as L.A.'s relief unit ranks second in ERA and third in fWAR, per FanGraphs.

The Dodgers have been the most well-rounded team all year. Now, they are officially bound for October baseball.
