From the outside looking in, having a two-headed monster at the forefront of a starting rotation may seem to be a dream come true. But sometimes pride gets in the way and leads to bad chemistry and falling-outs between teammates. However, Mets new star Max Scherzer has no problem deferring to Jacob DeGrom for the role of ace.
Scherzer signed a three-year deal with New York prior to the lockout and the questions immediately began rolling in about who would be the alpha dog in Queens. While many expected deGrom to remain at the front of the rotation, the star right-hander has battled injury issues over the past couple of seasons. When you factor in Scherzer's bulldog mentality there is certainly a case to be made for him leading the staff.
But this is a very mature decision made by Scherzer. The last thing the Mets need is in-house drama, especially when they dealt with plenty of that last year.
There is also the fact that many people still classify deGrom as the best pitcher in baseball despite having his season come to an early end in 2021. Prior to his season-ending injury in July, deGrom had posted a 7-2 record with a ridiculous 1.08 ERA and 146 strikeouts. He practically had the NL Cy Young award all wrapped up if he had managed to stay healthy.
With his reputation preceding him, Scherzer displayed his respect for the Mets veteran ace. But in the end it does not matter who receives that title because these are two elite pitchers looking to lead New York to the postseason this year.
