New York Mets veteran second baseman Robinson Cano tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Cano, earning $24 million, will be suspended by Major League Baseball for the 2021 season and forfeit his salary.

Cano, a 38-year-old eight-time All-Star, joined the Mets via trade during the offseason before the 2019 season from the Seattle Mariners. He's most notable for his longtime tenure with the New York Yankees, the Metropolitans' cross-borough rival, winning the 2009 World Series.

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Cano hit .316/.352/.544 in 49 appearances during the shortened, 60-game 2020 MLB season for New York.

Cano's suspension comes at a strange time for the Mets, who were just purchased by hedge-fund manager and billionaire Steve Cohen. Under Cohen's stewardship, the Mets re-hired former general manager Sandy Alderson to run baseball operations. However, Cohen and Alderson are still seeking a president of baseball operations and GM to fill out a revamped front office for the Mets.

Replacing Cano at second base for the Mets, there are several options for a club that has built a core multi-positional dugout of players. One-time All-Star infielder/outfielder Jeff McNeil has shown superb hitting ability and has played at second base along with third and the corner outfield positions. Additionally, the 2020 season saw rookie Andres Gimenez rise onto the scene playing outstanding defense at the three infield positions excluding first base.

The Mets are heading into the winter with a new owner hell-bent on finally spending for the club after the Wilpon family was lampooned for not willing to shell out for top free agents like the big market New York team should. Perhaps New Yor will replace Cano's spot at second base with a free agent.
