The New York Yankees are one of several teams in the race for a Juan Soto trade. The Washington Nationals star is commanding a historic haul of prospects in return, as he is one of the game's greatest players at just 23 years old.

In addition to the high price that would have to be paid in a Soto trade, New York has another price they have to take care of. According to Buster Olney of ESPN, Aaron Judge's pending extension is the focus of the organization right now.

“The Yankees are a franchise of extraordinary wealth and financial capability, but one organization source said that at the moment, the focus within the front office is on American League MVP candidate Aaron Judge, who will be eligible for free agency in the fall,” Olney writes. “Said a rival exec: ‘Actually, getting Soto would give them an excuse to move on from Judge — and they'd get the younger player, like the Braves getting [Matt Olson] after they couldn't sign Freeman.'”

Although an outfield featuring Judge, Soto and Giancarlo Stanton would be insane, the Yankees would have to shell out unheard-of amounts of money to make it happen. Soto is looking to make half a billion dollars on his next deal and Judge will look to get at least a third of a billion.

New York certainly has the ability to pay both of them, even though it would balloon their team salary in addition to costing them their best prospects. The chance to win their 28th championship, and perhaps more, could be well worth it.
