In a world where most of us are simply trying to get friends to increase the fantasy league buy-in from $5 to $10, Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres are simply playing a different game. In an Instagram story posted by Padres outfielder Tommy Pham on Wednesday (and retweeted here), the rest of the world got to see just how much more luxurious the life of a professional athlete is than average:
Whaaaat. I’m over here playing in leagues $75 or less lol pic.twitter.com/W40A7KzeEq

Wow.
One Tweet in response summed up how most of us feel pretty well: “I've been trying to make my league go up from $20 for like 4 years in a row”.
$10,000 is especially pocket change for Manny Machado. In the midst of a 10 year / $300 million deal he signed before the 2020 season, Machado makes $10,000 in less than every three hours. Machado has proven to be deserving of that monster deal thus far, though, as he's hit .275 with a .502 slugging percentage and 69 home runs during his three seasons with San Diego. That's been good enough for 9.8 WAR, according to Baseball-Reference, making him a great value, considering that one of his seasons with the Friars was the 60 game 2020 campaign, and he was only getting paid $12 million in 2019.
Hosmer, on the other hand, is a different story. As he's made $84 million across his four seasons with San Diego, Hosmer has only accumulated 2.7 WAR, and could very well be on his way to getting replaced by breakout teammate Jake Cronenworth.
Regardless of disparities in performance within the team, the Padres clearly have good enough chemistry to be tight-knit. Machado and Co. are currently 66-50, which places them comfortably in the second wild-card spot in the National League. And they casually play games for large sums of money.
If only life were always that simple.
