Just a few weeks ago, Robinson Cano was released from the New York Mets, then promptly scooped up by the San Diego Padres, who were hoping his left-handed bat could provide a spark in their lineup. That was not the case. Cano's Padres career is over just as it started. CBS Sports and Padres sideline reporter Annie Heilbrunn have the details.

Robinson Canó's time with the San Diego Padres has ended, according to the team's sideline reporter Annie Heilbrunn. The Padres were expected to request Canó's permission to option him to the minors on Thursday, but Canó had enough service time to reject any optional assignment and elect free agency instead.

Cano was released by the Padres. The club initially planned to option him to Triple A-El Paso, though the former Met had enough service time to opt for free agency instead.

Cano was abysmal for the Padres, as he posted a .094/.121/.094 triple slash line in 33 plate appearances. This comes after a rough start with the Mets earlier in the 2022 MLB season.

The 39-year-old, who missed the entire 2021 season due to a drug suspension, was last productive in the pandemic-shortened season, when he batted .316 for the Mets.

It certainly seems like Cano's best days as a hitter are behind him, though it will be interesting to see if a market develops for his services after his second release.
