The San Francisco Giants have the best record in the majors, but with the Los Angeles Dodgers still looming large on their rearview mirror, they just can’t simply take any of their remaining games for granted. That’s also why the injury to Brandon Belt is a big blow to the Giants, who only leads Los Angeles by two games with each team having six more contests to play in the regular season.

Belt got hit in his left thumb while attempting to bunt during Sunday’s 6-2 road win over the Colorado Rockies. The injury was later diagnosed as a fractured left thumb, putting his availability for at least the rest of the regular season in great jeopardy. The injury could also potentially cost Belt games in the playoffs, depending on its severity. As of the moment, the Giants have not released an official timetable of return for Belt.

The first baseman is undoubtedly a huge reason for the success the Giants are having this season. Belt has mashed a team-leading 29 homers and is slashing .274/.378/.597.

With Belt out, the Giants could resort to putting eitheplar Wilmer Flores or LaMonte Wade Jr. on first base, while Darin Ruf is another option once he comes back om an IL designation.

The Giants, who are 102-54, will play the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-game series starting Tuesday before concluding the regular season with a three-game set at home versus the San Diego Padres.
