The Toronto Blue Jays have had a challenging start to the 2024 MLB season. Toronto possess a 27-30 record, which places them last in the AL East standings. To make matters worse, the Blue Jays received a tough injury update on prized relief pitcher Jordan Romano.
Romano is reportedly headed back to the 15-day injured list as manages his nagging elbow ailment, per the Toronto Sun. He had a tough time bouncing back from his showing against the Chicago White Sox on May 29th, where he pitched one inning. Romano had an MRI on Friday night and was diagnosed with right elbow inflammation.
Manager John Schneider provided more details on Romano's status before Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“There's no structural injury, just inflammation. He'll have downtime from throwing for a couple days and then we'll go from there,” Schneider said.
“The timeline we don't really know yet. With treatment and medication, we'll see how he's doing,” Schneider added.
Schneider revealed that Jordan Romano's injury is similar to what sidelined him at the start of the season. Hopefully, the right-hander will undergo a speedy recovery. Through 15 games, Romano has amassed eight saves and thrown 13 strikeouts on a 6.59 ERA and 1.46 WHIP.
Fellow right-hander Yimi Garcia is a prime candidate to pick up some of the slack from Romano's absence. The 33-year-old has accumulated two saves and thrown 26 strikeouts on a 1.23 ERA and 0.68 WHIP in 21 appearances.
The Blue Jays need all the help they can get amid Roman's injury, and Dan Schneider believes his club is ready to step up.
Blue Jays have what it takes to turn things around despite injury woes
Schneider understands the importance depth plays during injury-ridden times, and he challenged his team to embrace the moment during Romano's absence.
“Definitely an opportunity for guys to step up like they did at the beginning of the year,” Schneider said about Toronto's reliever group. “There’s been outings where (Romano) has been in hape and pretty good and other outings where (he hasn’t.) Just who he is and how important he is to us, (the IL stint) is doing what’s right for him right now.”
Toronto has pivotal matchups approaching as they enter the month of June. They want to turn things around and climb the AL East standings. Blue Jays legend Joe Bautista believes the club will figure things out.
“Everybody knows [the Blue Jays] have a great team on paper. It’s just about getting together and getting that consistency, then continuing to enjoy the health. I’m excited,” Bautista said, per Keegan Matheson, Blue Jays reporter for MLB.com.
“You can see it. It’s coming. I can’t wait for these guys to get on a hot streak and hit the summer with some wins, then be in the playoff hunt again. They’re a capable team. It’s just a matter of time. I’m looking forward to that moment when they're back at the top of the standings.”
The Blue Jays have the personnel necessary to make a run, but they must lock in and execute. It will be interesting to see how the team fares in the new month.
