Philadelphia Union will play hosts to NY Red Bulls in a true derby of the MLS Eastern Conference, with just a single point separating the two teams. Why Philadelphia Could Win This Game
After an incredible start to the season, Philadelphia Union definitely slowed down their roll. As mentioned above, they are yet to win a game since April 9th and their win versus Columbus Crew. In that span, they lost to Toronto FC, then dropped points in draws to CF Montreal, Nashville, and Los Angeles FC. Three of these four games were away from home, so that could be a factor that comes into the fray when discussing their recent results. Still, the overall feeling is that Philly could have snatched all nine points in their recent three draws, but they were unable to hold on to a lead that they had in all three games.
Now, coming back to their Subaru Park, Philadelphia Union are looking to turn around their recent fortunes. By winning this game, the Union would open a four-point lead over the Red Bulls, a significant lead over a team expected to challenge the first spot, currently held by Philadelphia. A four-point lead is not too much, but it is a nice cushion to have, given the fact that the Union have some fairly easy games in the next few weeks that should see them winning points again.
Additionally, a major reason why Philadelphia could win this affair is the fact that they are struggling and they need this game to turn it around. Losing to Orlando City in the US Open Cup midweek was surely a wake-up call for the Union. The NY Red Bulls are just one point behind Philadelphia in the standings and the general feeling is that they were supposed to be first. Unfortunately for them, lack of consistency really hurt the team this season. For instance, the last two games in April were two wins away from home, beating Orlando City and Chicago Fire, but then a 1-1 draw at home to the Portland Timbers really left a nasty feeling in the mouths of all NY Red Bulls fans.
It is clear that the NY Red Bulls are really struggling at their home arena, with just three points out of five games and no wins. Thus, playing away from home, in Philadelphia, should be a major advantage for the Red Bulls, given their perfect 5-0-0 record away from home. A major reason NY Red Bulls fans could expect a win in this match is that the away form of the Red Bulls is too good to expect anything less than a victory.
Additionally, even with the inconsistencies of the season, the NY Red Bulls are still a top team in the conference. It is also the fact of the conference is weaker than their western counterpart, but it should now downplay how great the Red Bulls have looked at times.
