Marvel's Moon Knight just finished its run on Disney+. Over the course of six weeks, fans were taken on a rollercoaster ride through Marc Spector's fractured psyche, Egyptian lore, and one of the many interpretations of the afterlife in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the ride itself was an enjoyable one, the post-credits scene was one that's filled with so much potential if a second season pushes through.

We take a deep dive down below at what exactly happened in this scene and what it means for the future of Moon Knight in the MCU.

Jake Lockley as the new Moon Knight

After six episodes, the trio of Marc Spector, Steven Grant, and Layla El-Faouly has managed to stop Arthur Harrow's plan of unleashing Ammit unto the world by imprisoning the goddess inside the cult leader's body. As this is being accomplished, Khonshu pleads with Marc and Steven to kill Harrow and prevent Ammit from returning. The pair rejects him and instead, compels Khonshu to release them from his service. Reluctantly, the Egyptian god agrees.

We then see Marc wake up inside Steven's apartment with the thought that their role as the Fist of Khonshu has already ended. This is where Marvel had us, until of course, the post-credits scene.

As the first set of credits was done, viewers were taken back to a psychiatric ward. But instead of seeing Marc back, we catch a depleted version of Harrow causing a cup of coffee to stumble onto the table. An unknown individual then takes the avatar of Ammit and leads him to the inside of a limousine. This is where we see Khonshu, albeit in a white suit rather than the mummified look we saw all season long.

For his part, Harrow dismisses Khonshu by saying he can't hurt him. The god then reveals that while Marc thought he was after Layla to become his avatar, he didn't need to because the former mercenary had no idea how fractured his mind was. At this point, we are introduced to Jake Lockley, the third personality inhabiting Marc's body. He goes on to kill Harrow after telling him that it's his turn to lose in Spanish.

According to the source material, Jake Lockley is part of a triumvirate of personalities inhabiting one body, the other two being Marc Spector and Steven Grant. While Marc's personality is similar to that of the Batman and Steven is close to billionaire Bruce Wayne's, Jake Lockley can be likened to Moses Malone – an individual who can seamlessly mix in with elements from the criminal underworld to gather crucial intelligence. Lockley does this by driving a cab that takes him to different locations in the comics.

While Marvel has repurposed Steven Grant to a mild-mannered personality in the Disney+ series, they seem to have tweaked Jake as well. Although the driver aspect has been maintained, the new personality is more violent and cunning than both Marc and Steven.

With both Marc and Steven thinking that they're no longer the avatar of Khonshu, they have no idea that the Egyptian god has found a backdoor solution to this dilemma through Jake. As it stands, Khonshu can still accomplish his goals of justice and vengeance by using the Jake Lockley personality, one who is constrained by morals as Marc and Steven are.

In this regard, Moon Knight still exists with Jake as the personality behind the suit. Although both Marc and Steven are clueless about this development, this scene still makes it possible for the Fist of Khonshu to appear in a potential second season, or other Marvel projects.

The possible future of Moon Knight in the MCU

With this post-credits scene, Marvel is laying the foundation for more stories involving Moon Knight in the MCU. At the same time, the brains behind these projects can integrate more of Marc and Steven's wonderful dynamic and put it in direct conflict with Jake. Add Layla into the mix and Khonshu's betrayal, and fans can get to see another layer to this character's part in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, a second season of Moon Knight may not happen, just like what Marvel did with WandaVision. Instead of another six-episode adventure, the studio might opt to have the Fist of Khonshu appear in other films or series. The best example is the Scarlet Witch appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Whether Moon Knight gets a second season or not is up in the air right now. What's certain, though, is that Marvel has stumbled upon an opportunity to deliver more compelling and complex stories with Marc, Steven, and potentially, Jake at the center of it, and Oscar Isaac masterfully playing all three personalities. With the actor on board, fans will surely flock to whatever project he'll be on next.
