Report: Nets, Sixers, Magic, Spurs, Clippers, Rockets, Pacers interested in Al-Farouq Aminu

Al-Farouq Aminu

Portland Trail Blazers forward Al-Farouq Aminu is set to be an unrestricted free agent once free agency opens on Sunday evening, and he is already drawing interest from a number of teams around the league:

Aminu has proven to be one of the more versatile forwards in the game. Despite his size (6’9″ and 220 pounds), he can play a sort of modified stretch 4 given his comfort with shooting from the perimeter. Aminu also averaged 7.5 rebounds per game in Portland last season. His length makes him a rangy defender, whether on the block or the perimeter.

The Nets appear to be on the verge of landing their primary target — Kyrie Irving — but they could also stand to bolster the frontcourt, especially if they feel that Aminu would prove to be an upgrade over Rondae Hollis-Jefferson.

Orlando is also set to bring Nikola Vucevic back into the fold, but they may lose out on Terrence Ross in free agency, and the team needs capable defenders.

Philly’s need for versatile wings will be particularly obvious if they somehow fail to re-sign Tobias Harris, but the Sixers would also likely love to be able to give more minutes to Aminu than to someone like Mike Scott.

Aminu would likely mesh well with Gregg Popovich’s system in San Antonio, and it probably makes more sense to sign him than to bring back an older Rudy Gay.

Meanwhile, the Rockets and Pacers are both in need of shooters at the forward position, and Aminu actually began his career with the Clippers.

Regardless, Al-Farouq Aminu is attracting interest both for his skill set as well as his ability to start or come off the bench and provide depth.
