Carmelo Anthony is a future Hall of Fame player and, at 35 years old, it would seem that he might still have something to offer an NBA team that might inquire about his services. At least, some coaches and executives certainly think so…

David Aldridge of The Athletic asked personnel from around the league whether or not they believed that Anthony could still be productive, as well as what team(s) he might fit in with, and the results were telling.

Many of the respondents suggested that Anthony could fit in with the right team if he were willing to accept a given role:

Eastern Conference executive: “It’s all about if he will accept a role. (He can be an) off the bench scorer and locker room positive influence. He  could make $5-7 million.”

Western Conference assistant coach: “I think he COULD. The issue might be his willingness to accept a certain type of role. It’s tough to take away minutes from a young ‘up and comer’ for ‘Melo right now, and risk limiting that young player’s growth curve because of it. I think that might be the thought across the board (even for contending teams). Someone might look to add him for a deep playoff run later though. I LOVE ‘Melo too, FYI!”

Meanwhile, one Western Conference executive thinks that South Beach or Portland might be good spots for Anthony to land:

Western Conference executive: “Miami, if he is willing to work with (Pat) Riley hard on conditioning. He can replace D-Wade’s scoring. Or, Portland. They play a lot of isolation basketball and they need another scorer. Carmelo is a dinosaur in today’s NBA. Everyone wants ball movement and three-point shooting; not Melo’s forte.”

Anthony has received an outpouring of support from current and former players, with some reports suggesting that Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were lobbying for the Nets to bring him to Brooklyn.

Whether or not Anthony is offered a contract remains to be seen, but he sure is a lightning rod for debate.
