Former NBA guard Ty Lawson has been accused of assault.
According to celebrity gossip site TMZ, in May the former Denver Nuggets floor general choked and punched Jonae Keyes in the head while she was giving he and her friend a ride to a club. The alleged assault began after Lawson and Keyes' friend got into a physical dispute, causing Keyes to intervene.
In the suit filed by Farid Yaghoubtil, Keyes claims the argument turned physical … and when she tried to intervene — she says the 5-foot-11, 195-pound former point guard unexpectedly turned violent toward her.
She says 31-year-old Lawson grabbed her by the neck, choked her and began punching her in the head. She claims she never fought back during the altercation.
Keyes says she suffered physical and psychological damages as a result of the purported assault, and is suing Lawson for an unspecified amount. TMZ reached out to Lawson for comment on the matter, but he has yet to respond.
A top-10 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, the University of North Carolina product quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic lead guards in basketball. Blessed with elite speed and quickness, he was a borderline All-Star for the Denver Nuggets from 2011-12 to 2013-14, orchestrating one of the league's fastest and most feared offensive attacks.
Lawson's career began unraveling during the 2015-16 season, amid a series of injuries and a third arrest for driving under the influence. He last played for the Sacramento Kings in 2016-17, averaging 9.9 points and 4.8 assists per game.
