Why The Cavaliers Could Cover The Spread

The Cleveland Cavaliers have had a solid year so far. Through the first half of the regular season, they have managed to win 24 games and only lose 18. The Cavs are coming off back-to-back victories, with their most recent win coming over the Utah Jazz by 20. Cleveland has a lot of potential, and while COVID and injuries have proven to be problematic, this Cavs team has shown that they are willing to battle hard. The Cavaliers will look to extend their win streak to three on Friday as they face off against a vulnerable Spurs team.

If the Cavs are able to replicate their performance against the Jazz, then they should have no problem securing a win on Friday. In their win over Utah, Cleveland had the edge across nearly all statistics. The first thing that stands out is their efficiency, the Cavs made 43 of their 81 shot attempts, compared to Utah who made 34 of 85 attempts. On top of that, Cleveland had more rebounds and more assists than the Jazz, and not by a small margin. The Cavs grabbed 18 more rebounds than Utah and dished out 17 more assists. Overall, Cleveland played a great all-around game and will look to mimic that performance on Friday.

While COVID and injuries were at one point a major concern for Cleveland, they are currently marginally affected. The Cavs have four players listed on their injury report, only one of which was a recent addition. The recent addition is Rajon Rondo who is questionable for Friday's match. Besides that Cleveland has nearly all their key players healthy and has looked really good. Friday is definitely a winnable game for the Cavs and as long as their guys show up ready to battle then they should have no problem grabbing this win on the road.

Why The Spurs Could Cover The Spread

The San Antonio Spurs have had a disappointing year up to this point. Through the first half of the regular season, they have a losing record with only 15 wins and 26 losses. The Spurs are coming off four straight losses with their most recent defeat coming at the hands of the Houston Rockets by four. San Antonio will look to turn things around on Friday as they face a tough Cavs team. The Spurs have shown flashes of competitiveness, but have failed to be consistent. If they can improve on their last game and step up on Friday, then they have a shot at beating Cleveland.

The Spurs and Rockets were close across nearly all metrics. San Antonio actually had the lead heading into the second half, but Houston managed to outscore the Spurs in both the third and fourth quarters. The Spurs did a good job of keeping their shot volume high, finishing the night with 99 shot attempts compared to only 82 from Houston. However, San Antonio's efficiency was much lower than Houston's, which ultimately accounts for the score discrepancy. The Spurs played a solid game but ultimately came up short. They will have a chance to bounce back on Friday against a Cavs team that might not fare well against a high-volume team like San Antonio.

Both COVID and injuries are currently affecting this team, but the Spurs are not crippled. San Antonio only has four players on the injury report. Drew Eubanks is listed as probable for Friday's match and Derrick White is listed as questionable. For the most part, the Spurs are healthy and will be able to battle on Friday. Dejounte Murray's triple-double against Houston wasn't enough to get them the win, but he has been a huge reason they have stayed competitive. Expect Murray to potentially have another big night.

Final Cavaliers-Spurs Prediction & Pick

This is a fairly easy pick. The Cavaliers are just by far the better team. While Derrick White could make an impact for the Spurs if he returns to action, his impact isn't large enough to consider San Antonio winning. Cleveland is a good team and they just handily beat the Jazz. Pick the Cavaliers to win and cover.
