Why The Rockets Could Cover The Spread

The Houston Rockets have been one of the worst teams in the NBA. Through the first half of the regular season, they have only managed to win 11 games and have lost a staggering 31 of their matches. Houston has lost their last three games, with their most recent defeat coming at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers by 20. The Rockets will look to start and turn things around on Wednesday against a beatable spurs team. If Houston wants to steal this win on the road they will need to improve on their last matches. Wednesday is a winnable game for Houston and provides this Rockets team with a chance to break their losing streak.

Houston came up short in nearly every statistic in their loss to the Sixers. Most notably, however, was their lack of shooting volume and efficiency. The Rockets only made 30 of their 77 shot attempts, compared to the Sixers who made 43 of their 94 shots. While making less than 40% of your shots is a concern, an equal, if not bigger, the concern is that the Rockets only took 77 shots. If Houston wants to win games they are going to do so by increasing their volume. They may not have the best shooters in the league, but if the Rockets can put up a ton of shots then that will be tough to compete with. Houston has not been nearly aggressive enough. If they can kick it up a notch on Wednesday then they could definitely win this game.

While injuries and COVID are of major concern for many teams in the league, the Rockets are for the most part unaffected. Houston currently has only three players listed on their injury report, two of which are questionable for Wednesday's match. So the silver lining in all of this is that at least they are healthy. Houston will have more than a fair shot at taking down San Antonio. If they can break out of their scoring slump and start putting up shots then they should get this win. The Rockets will lean heavily on their best guys in this match. Houston as a whole has been struggling, but this could be the game that gets them back on track.

Why The Spurs Could Cover The Spread

The San Antonio Spurs have not had a great season so far. Through the first half of the year, they have only managed to win 15 games and have lost 25. Like the Rockets, San Antonio is coming off three straight losses with their most recent loss coming against the New York Knicks by 15.  The Spurs have shown some competitive flashes this season, but for the most part, have struggled. If San Antonio wants to win on Wednesday they will need to play better than they did against the Knicks. This is definitely a winnable game for the Spurs, so it should be an interesting match-up.

The biggest positive takeaway from the Spurs' loss to the Knicks was the pure shooting volume that San Antonio had. The Spurs took 95 shots in that game. However, they only made 39, compared to the Knicks who made 40 of their 82 shot attempts. San Antonio was very competitive for the first half of the game but allowed New York to pull ahead towards the end. If the Spurs can just up their shooting efficiency then they will have no problem with Houston.

Unlike the Rockets, San Antonio is currently dealing with numerous unavailable players. The Spurs currently have seven players listed on their injury report. Of those players, only one is listed as questionable for Wednesday's game. Headlining the unavailable players are Derrick White and Keldon Johnson. This could be a tough game for San Antonio, they will definitely be leaning heavily on players like Dejounte Murray and Jakob Poeltl in this match.

Final Rockets-Spurs Prediction & Pick

This is a pretty tough decision. Both of these teams have been struggling this season and both have lost their last three games. This could be a very close game which is why the spread is kind of confusing. Even with the spread, the Rockets have been getting dominated recently and the Spurs have at least managed to maintain some level of competitiveness. Pick the Spurs to win and cover.
