Now without a head coach following the recent firing of head coach Tubby Smith, the Memphis Tigers are currently in the midst of their search for his successor. Someone has already emerged as a favorite to take over his role, though, with one of their most popular players before possibly becoming the next one to call the plays for them on the sidelines.

It has been reported that there’s growing belief that Penny Hardway has the inside track in landing the job at his alma mater, especially with news that he has hired two new personnel to work with him, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.

The former third overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft, suited up for the Tigers in his collegiate days for two years. It was with the team that he established himself as one of the best college players at that time, receiving a lot of attention for being a tall point guard who has the ability to score, as well as set up his teammates on offense. He reached the NBA after being selected by the Golden State Warriors then traded to the Orlando Magic on draft night where he was paired with Shaquille O’Neal.

Hardaway spent 14 seasons in the league, appearing for four different franchises, before hanging his sneakers for good back in 2008. He was named an All-Star four times and an All-NBA First Team member twice — among his achievements at the highest level. With his experience and knowledge of the game, Memphis would definitely be in good hands if he is indeed going to be their head coach, and it will be interesting to see if he can bring a lot of success to the team.
