The reported trade between the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Pelicans involving Nikola Mirotic has now fallen apart, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
The trade that was reported was that the Bulls would receive Omer Asik and a first-round pick for Mirotic, but now it appears to not be happening.
Mirotic has long been rumored to be on the trade market for Chicago. His season started off very interestingly after an altercation with teammate Bobby Portis leading to him missing significant time after a punch to the face.
Since returning, Mirotic helped right the ship for the Bulls and actually lead them into the playoff conversation. Nevertheless, Chicago is looking to capitalize on Mirotic's value, although it seems like this trade to the Pelicans may not be happening right now.
Article Continues BelowWojnarowksi also is reporting that Mirotic controls a lot of power in whether or not this trade happens. He has a team option for next season that would need to be picked up by the Bulls prior to the trade becoming complete, otherwise he will eventually serve as a rental for the Pelicans.
Per Woj:
Chicago and New Orleans don't need Mirotic's permission to make trade should his $12.5M team option in 2018-19 get guaranteed with a trade. Without that salary guaranteed prior to finalizing trade, teams need Mirotic to agree. Otherwise, Mirotic likely becomes a rental for Pels.
Essentially, Mirotic has control over his future with a trade. He can't be sure that New Orleans will pick up his $12.5M option next season — unless Chicago does it for him prior to completing the trade. It is understandable why Mirotic isn't eager to cost himself that $12.5M.
